When it’s time for mistletoe and holly, Savannah sure knows how to deck out the halls. It’s a festive holiday destination with an array of events sure to get you in the Christmas mood.
First up, the three-day 32nd Christmas Made in the South takes place Nov. 29-21 at the Savannah Convention Center. Christmas Made in the South focuses on keeping the world of fine arts and crafts vibrant. Santa’s elves have been hard at work to put on a marketplace like no other. Shop for one-of-a-kind designs, foods, apparel, and more for yourself or someone on your Christmas list.
Next up, watch the annual Boat Parade of Lights on Nov. 27 when 40 decorated vessels parade the riverfront starting at 7 p.m. and culminating in a colorful fireworks show. Get tickets aboard the Georgia Queen to enjoy the holiday parade from the water, or park yourself at one of the riverfront’s rooftop bars for a great view.
Get tickets to see “A Christmas Tradition” at The Historic Savannah Theatre, which transforms into a winter wonderland for one of Savannah’s favorite events. There’s singing and dancing, glitz and glitter in this two-hour production that runs from Nov. 25 to Dec. 24. The theatre itself, which opened in 1818, is a beautiful venue and has hosted performances by some of the world’s most renowned stars, including Lillian Russell, Oscar Wilde, and W.C. Fields. Located on Chippewa Square, it is one of the oldest continually operating theaters in the U.S.
Take the festive, two-hour Holiday Lights & Sights Tour with Old Town Trolley Tours, which rolls Nov. 26 through Dec. 24. Reservations are required. The tour highlights include time-traveling back to the 1820s at the Davenport House, a visit with St. Nick in the Plant Riverside District, and holiday treats. See the city dressed in its holiday best with this magical tour.
Savannah’s beautiful spirit becomes even more exquisite during the holiday season, and City Market is no exception. Attend City Market Open House from 6-9 p.m. on Dec. 3. Stroll in the flickering light of 500-plus luminaria lining the two-block courtyard, serenaded by Christmas melodies. Enjoy treats in City Market shops and watch for a glimpse of Father Christmas.
Lights on Tybee Christmas Parade & Tree Lighting starts at 6 p.m. on Dec. 3, with Santa arriving, led by a parade of lights down to the beach. At the beach roundabout, watch the lighting of the 18-foot Christmas tree, then enjoy caroling, dancing, holiday refreshments, and more. This free event is a magical way to ring in the holidays.
