It is so beautiful, in fact, that it is the only area Union Gen. William Sherman chose not to burn to the ground during his Civil War “March to the Sea.”
First, there are those perfectly planned out squares. James Olgethorpe sat down and plotted the squares as individual communities in 1733. Now, almost 300 years later, those squares and parks continue to serve as the heart of Savannah’s Historic District. Stroll its streets. Picnic in a park. Make a wish at a fountain. There is a leisurely pace to life in Savannah and it starts with a peaceful oasis right outside the door of your accommodations.
Then there’s that quintessential Southern hospitality. Locals go out of their way to make you feel welcome. They are proud of their hometown and love to it show off.
And that goes hand-in-hand with another great thing about Savannah: Every day is a reason for a party. Take that drink-to-go and hit the Historic District’s streets (on foot, of course) because this city loves to celebrate. The joie de vivre spirit makes a great excuse for trying some creative craft cocktail concoctions. With current desires for social distancing, the To-Go cup is definitely the way to roll.
Savannah is also one of America’s most haunted cities. Every corner and just about every building hosts a ghost, with tales that has been told for decades. That Haint Blue paint you see on porches is there to ward off evil spirits. As Jim Williams says in “Midnight in the Garden of Good & Evil,” when you are in Savannah you are deep in Hoodoo country.
