Savannah is wonderful any time of year. It can, however, get a little steamy during the summer time. We like to think that’s still part of the charm of Savannah though! We’ve got some refreshing ways to cool off when the temperature starts to rise.

Choose a Flavor

Nothing says summertime like a creamy, delicious ice cream treat. And what better place to get one than at longtime Savannah tradition, Leopold’s Ice Cream, 212 E. Broughton St. With its marble soda fountain and friendly soda jerks, it’s a step back in time. After all, they’ve been around since 1919 when the Leopold brothers started cranking out homemade delicacies. Get a double scoop of a classic like banana made with real bananas or butter pecan loaded with Georgia nuts, or try a more exotic flavor like rum bisque, Tutti Frutti and seasonal sorbets. Each month, they add something special to the menu – Spicy Mocha, strawberry shortcake, or chocolate raspberry. Or, go for an old-fashioned ice cream soda, hot fudge sundae or malted milk shake.

Soda Pop Shoppe, 114 Bull St., is another iconic ice cream parlor in Savannah. It’s small (don’t blink or you miss it), but you can’t beat the friendly service, hand-dipped ice cream and hometown appeal. Get a hot dog while you’re there. Take note: The Soda Pop Shoppe is closed on Sundays and only takes cash.

Make a Splash in Savannah

If you’re staying in the Savannah Historic District, make a splash in a spray fountain at one of the squares. Ellis Square at Barnard Street and West Congress Street has fountains of shooting water for kids, as well as picnic tables and a life-sized chess set. Forsyth Park at Drayton Street and West Gaston Street has a spray pool, huge oak trees and a canopied play-area for shade.

When Life Gives You Lemons …

Few things are quite as satisfying as an ice-cold lemonade on a warm summer day. Vinnie Van Go-Gos may be a pizza joint, but their pink lemonade is on point. The homemade, fresh-squeezed lemonade at Kayak Kafe, 1 E. Broughton St. at Bull Street, will cool you off after a walking tour. Gallery Espresso, 234 Bull St. also serves up a tasty pink lemonade. They make a refreshing Italian soda, as well.

Jump In

A splash in the pool is the most obvious way to cool off after a day of shopping, touring or walking the historic district. We offer several Savannah vacation rentals in communities with pools, some in the historic district and on the riverfront. So, you can hop off the trolley and jump in the pool.

After all, you stay happy when you stay cool.
