A super slate of special events is on tap this winter, just in time for your Savannah getaway.
For a cultural night-out, see the State Ballet of Ukraine Presents “Cinderella” on Jan. 8 at the Johnny Mercer Theatre. The captivating two-act performance of Cinderella, one of the most beloved stories of all time, has no fewer than 55 of Ukraine’s finest performers. Set to Sergei Prokofiev's music with Vladimir Vasiliev's choreography, this full-scale production follows the beautiful maiden's story as she seeks her handsome Prince Charming - with the help of a little magic, of course.
You may not think Savannah and hockey go together, but you’d be wrong. Rumble in the Rink is back this year after a year off due to covid. The enmarket Savannah Hockey Classic, takes place on Jan. 14-15 at the Savannah Civic Center. The Classic pits four college teams against one another - Georgia Tech, the Georgia Bulldogs, Florida State Seminoles, and the Florida Gators. The Classic has brought top collegiate hockey action to a local audience since 1999.
The Three Choirs Festival takes place at 5 p.m. on Jan. 16 at the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, when 120 voices join the Cathedral Brass and organ. The choirs of Wesley Monumental United Methodist Church and Christ Church Anglican join with the Cathedral Choir for an evening of spectacular music.
The Martin Luther King Day Parade takes place at 10 a.m. on Jan. 17 rolling from the intersection of East Broad Street and East Liberty Street, proceeding on East Broad to East Oglethorpe then to East Broughton and up MLK Jr. Boulevard.
Whether you’re a do-it-yourselfer or just love watching HGTV, you’ll enjoy the 22nd Low Country Home & Garden Show, set Jan. 21-23, 2022, at the Savannah Convention Center on Hutchinson Island. The show features everything you need for home and garden projects.
History lovers will get fired up about the Colonial Faire and Muster set Feb. 5-6 at Wormsloe Historic Site. The Colonial-era-themed event includes military and craft demonstrations, period music, and dance. Explore the Wormsloe State Historic Site, with its live oaks, historic reunions, and history that dates to the days of Native American inhabitants. Visitors can interact with historical interpreters, peruse artifacts in the museum and follow a nature trail through the site.
Another event for history lovers is Super Museum Sunday on Feb. 6, with free admission to dozens of Savannah and area museums and historic sites. It’s all part of the Georgia History Festival. Some participating museums include the American Prohibition Museum, Beach Institute African American Cultural Center, Bonaventure Historical Society, Coastal Georgia Botanical Gardens, First Bryan Baptist Church, Georgia Railroad Museum, Juliette Gordon Low Birthplace, King-Tisdell Cottage, Lutheran Church of the Ascension, Massie Heritage Center, Old Fort Jackson, Ossabaw Island, Savannah African Art Museum, Ships of the Sea Maritime Museum and the Savannah Children’s Museum, among many, many others.
The Savannah Book Festival is set Feb. 17-20, 2022 in Telfair Square. This year’s Feb. 17 headliner is acclaimed author David Baldacci, who has 43 published novels including the most recent “Mercy.” Six authors have been announced for the event, which is free and open to the public each Presidents’ Day weekend. The Book Festival draws 8,000 to 10,000 visitors each year to historic Savannah.
