There is no shortage of things to do in Savannah year-round, but May brings out some highlights. With longer and warmer days, there is even more time to enjoy all the city has to offer.
Kick the month off with a fiesta. The 2022 Cinco de Mayo Celebration is set for May 5 at Plant Riverside District. The fun starts at 6 p.m. for the free event that’s open to the public. Savannah Tequila Co. will serve a wide range of Mexican food and drink. A 10-piece Afro-Cuban salsa orchestra will provide the music in Montgomery Park while a DJ closes out the night along the riverwalk.
Keep the international theme at the 44th Savannah Scottish Games on May 7 at historic Bethesda Academy. The Games had a two-year COVID hiatus, but there’s back with the athletes, pipe bands, Highland dancers, border collies, historic reenacts, Scottish vendors, Celtic musicians, and more. Admission is $15 for adults, $5 for students, and free for children 10 and under.
That’s also Mother’s Day weekend, and there are plenty of ways to celebrate including a Mother’s Day brunch or dinner cruise with Savannah Riverboats or a special dinner at a favorite spot like The Olde Pink House, Vic’s on the River, and Garibaldi’s.
Early mornings make a wonderful time to stroll the city and take in the historic buildings. Throughout May, the Early Bird Preservation Walking Tour of the East Side is held each Saturday from the Davenport House. The 2.3-mile walk takes you through one of the oldest and most varied neighborhoods to learn about historic preservation in Savannah. Cost is $21 plus tax, and coffee and treats in the Davenport House Garden follow. Reservations are recommended, but walk-ins are welcome.
Speaking of the Davenport House, Springtime Tea is held at 5 p.m. each Wednesday and Thursday afternoon in May. Costumed interpreters join guests for this delightful 19th-century tea tradition in the Davenport House’s beautiful courtyard garden. The cost is $18 for adults; $14 for children. Reservations are recommended as participation is limited.
Take a Full Moon Hike at Parks After Dark on May 15 at Wormsloe Historic Site. Put on your hiking shoes and bring a flashlight as you tromp through the maritime forest. Get a rare view of the sunset over Moon River. The three-mile hike starts at the Visitor Center and lasts about two hours. Cost is $7-$15.
Pick up some produce at the Forsyth Farmers Market, held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays at the south end of Forsyth Park.
The Top Back Car Show Off is set May 20-22 as one of Unity in the Community’s River Street monthly events. It will feature arts and crafts, music, food, and entertainment. Held the third weekend of the month, the event brings together the different cultures of Savannah.
