The Memorial Day holiday traditionally kicks off the summer and marks one of the busiest weekends of the year to visit the beach. But it’s also a time to honor those who died in service to our country. A visit to Tybee Island allows you to do both.
Summer shoots off to an earlier start on Tybee Island with the Beach Bum Parade, which starts at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, May 20. It pits parade floats vs. parade watchers in an epic squirt gun battle. Whether you ride or watch, bring a water gun and be prepared to get wet during one of the oldest events on the island.
Attend the Memorial Day Commemoration, set from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 28 at Fort McAllister State Park in nearby Richmond Hill. This is an old-fashioned Memorial Day activity that pays tribute to patriots who died while serving in the U.S. military. Living history interpretations take place throughout the day, including musket firing. Tour the fort, museum, and grounds of Fort McAllister, located along the banks of the Ogeechee River. Admission is $9.
The Diggery Dino Show at Tybee Post Theater, also on Saturday, May 28, is perfect for families with young kids. The show starts at 3 p.m. and follows the adventure as Paleontologist Diggery Diggers discovers a top-secret box. Curious, Diggery opens the box and unleashes the DinoSauroScope 3000 or DINA, taking the audience back in time to interact with dinosaurs. The show has incredible props including large, interactive animated characters, dinosaur bones, a giant dinosaur egg, and beautiful puppets. Combined with intriguing magic and rocking music, this is the Story Ship’s most memorable adventure.
Summer holidays mean it’s time for fresh berries and grilled veggies. Pick up produce at the Tybee Island Farmers Market, held from 4-7 p.m. on Monday, May 30 at the Tybee Island Lighthouse. Parking is free.
The beaches are the main attraction on Tybee, so plan to spend some time soaking up the sun while playing in the sand. The Island has four public beaches - three on the Atlantic Ocean and Back River Beach.
