Savannah’s beach is among the best in the country, so it’s no surprise there are tons of activities and attractions to keep you busy during your Tybee Island vacation.
Take a Dolphin Tour
Seeing dolphins in the wild never gets old – no matter your age. Head out on an excursion that gets you up close to these magnificent creatures. They’ve been known to jump through the boat wake and make friends with spectators. Captain Derek’s Dolphin Adventure Tour departs from its dock just off Old Tybee Road at the Lazaretto Creek Bridge. Captain Mike’s Dolphin Tour leaves from Lazaretto Creek Marina to take passengers out into the ocean to view dolphins in their natural habitat. You’ll see a lot of wildlife as well as historic sites on these excursions, which last one to one and a half hours.
Bike Tybee Island
Bicycling is a great way to get around Tybee Island. If you bring your own, that’s great. If not, no problem. There are Tybee Island bike rentals that will set you up with a bike during your stay. Pick up a bike at one of the two locations of Tim’s Beach Gear or have one delivered by Fat Tire Bikes. Tybee Island has been named one of the country’s “Most Bicycle Friendly Communities” by the League of American Bicyclists. The Island has a network of Rails to Trails bike lanes, so you’ll discover plenty of places to explore.
Watersports in Tybee
A personal watercraft is an exhilarating way to get out on the water and see Tybee Island from a different viewpoint. Leave from the dock at Tybee Jet Ski and Watersports located at Lazaretto Creek Marina. They even offer tours with a guide that leave from that location. Old Tybee Road Jet Ski Rentals is just next to the marina. They offer unique tours like a Shark Teeth Hunting Tour and a Dolphin Search and Historic Tour.
Tybee Island Sunset
A beach vacation isn’t complete without watching the sunset on another gorgeous day. Lucky for you, there’s no need to miss it during a Tybee Island stay. Back River Beach is a hidden gem that provides a quiet spot for watching the sun go down. Bring a cooler and a chair, and you’re set. If you prefer to enjoy dinner and a craft cocktail with a perfect view, head to CoCo’s Sunset Grille or A-J’s Dockside Restaurant. Sip a cold one while you take in nature’s light show.
Go Crabbing
Ever been crabbing? It’s a fun activity for the whole family. The gear is simple: A piece of rope or fishing line, a raw chicken leg, and a scoop net. (You might need a sinker/weight as well.) Tie the chicken to the end of the rope, sink it from one of the public piers or a jetty, and wait for the crab to take the bait. Then swoop in for the catch. If you’d rather a more organized outing, Sundial Charters takes visitors on unforgettable excursions that include crabbing, as well as throwing a cast net, watching dolphins, hunting for fossils and combing the beaches for treasures.
Catch a Wave
Have you always wanted to learn to surf? There’s no time like the present. Take a private or group lesson with one of the Island’s surf schools. Certified instructors at Tybee Surf Lessons and Tybee Surf School get students up on a board in no time, no matter the age or skill level. It’s a blast and definitely a story worth telling once you get back home.
