The Andrew Low House was built in 1848 on a lot facing Lafayette Square in Savannah. Andrew Low, who was a cotton broker from Scotland, hired New York architect John Norris to design and build this beautiful Italian-style mansion. The Andrew Low House remained in his family until his daughter-in-law Juliette Gordon Low, founder of the Girl Scouts of America, passed away in 1927. The National Society of the Colonial Dames of America in the State of Georgia purchased the home in 1928 and it has been open to the public since 1950. If you’re looking for fun Savannah GA Activities, visiting the Andrew Low House is a perfect way to spend your time!
Touring the Home
Visitors can take a tour of the house Monday – Saturday from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. and on Sunday from 12 p.m. – 4 p.m. Tours are offered daily on the hour and half hour. Tickets cost $10 for adults and $9 for children.
The tour of the house will take you through the Front Formal Parlor, which the Low’s would have used for entertaining guests. Downstairs is also the Informal Parlor, the Dining Room, and the Low Library with portraits of William MacKay Low and Andrew Low II.
As you ascend the staircase to the second floor of the home you will see the Robert E. Lee room. It’s believed that General Robert E. Lee stayed in this room for a week in April 1870. Upstairs there is also a children’s bedroom with dolls and toys from the 1850’s, the Thackeray Bedroom which was named after the English author William Makepeace Thackeray who was a guest of Andrew Low, the bathing room, the Stiles room where Andrew Low’s mother-in-law stayed, and The Low Bedroom which he and his second wife shared.
The historic parterre garden behind the Andrew Low house is one of just a few original 19th-century gardens in Savannah. The gardens were made shortly after the house was built and include distinctive hourglass-shaped garden beds.
The tours during the day will show you the beauty of this home and share its unique history full of famous guests but if you want to see the spookier side of the house then stop by at night time for a ghost tour.
Ghost Tours
Ghost City Tours offers a ghost tour of the Andrew Low House. Employees of the house and guests have reported seeing objects move around and have heard footsteps when no one is there. It is thought that the ghost of Andrew Low’s butler Tom may still live in the mansion, keeping things tidy and in place. Some believe the ghost of Robert E. Lee may also haunt the place. Tickets for the ghost tour must be ordered in advance online.
