If you’re looking for things to do in Savannah GA, add this attraction to your list. Getting to step back in time, if only for a brief period, is always fascinating, even if we don’t always like what we see. The lessons we learn can be priceless ones, as experienced by a visit to the Pin Point Heritage Museum. Located at 9924 Pin Point Avenue in Savannah and housed inside the walls of what was once an oyster and crab factory, offering incredible views of the marshlands outside its door, this museum teaches us about the culture of the Gullah/Geechee.

Who are the Gullah/Geechee?

A group of African Americans who live in Southeastern portion of the United States, the Gullah hail from the South Carolina islanders and the Geechee call the Georgia Islands their home. Their culture is a blend of the old and the new, and they even have their own language, food, and religious beliefs. The Pin Point Heritage Museum gives us insight to this strong and unique people, offering artifacts, exhibits, and other multi-media exhibitions that entertain as they educate.

What to Expect During Your Visit at Pin Point Heritage Museum

Breathtaking views of the marsh greet you as you pull into the parking area of the museum, but it’s the murals painted on the white walls that will draw you in. Life-size depictions of the Gullah/Geechee people going about their daily activities feel real and surround one of the largest buildings in the complex. Inside, examples of the tools they used, the artwork they created, and photos of the Gullah/Geechee people adorn the walls.

As you step through the doors of the museum, you actually feel as if you are leaving 2018 and entering into a portal that takes you straight to the 1930s. Many rooms feature examples of the original purpose of the buildings that complete this museum; a table with ice, crabs, and tools is one example, and many of the photos found throughout show the Gullah/Geechee working with the crabs and oysters that both fed them and put money in their pockets. Outside, you will find wooden boats that were once used to harvest sea creatures from the waters, a dock that leads far out into the bay, and in one area, a memorial to a man described as the son of Pin Point.

Costing only $8 for adults and $4 for children aged 2-12, the extraordinary Pin Point Heritage Museum fits into most vacation budgets.
