Though the weather outside rarely gets frightful in Savannah, it’s still delightful to warm up with a hot drink. Fortunately, the city’s historic district is chock-full of specialty coffee shops where you can get a steaming cup of a robust and delicious brew.
Savannah’s coffee scene is growing, and each of its cafes offers a setting as eclectic and unique as the city itself.
The Sentient Bean
Located across from Forsyth Park’s southside, the Sentient Bean is one of our favorite coffee shops. The cafe serves organic, fair-trade specialty beverages, using coffee roasted in small batches at Cafe Campesino in Americus, Ga. The cow’s milk is from Southern Swiss Dairy, just up the road in Waynesboro. The Sentient Bean is now open for take-out, delivery, and pick-up. Outdoor seating is also available.
Blends a Coffee Boutique
Blends a Coffee Boutique on East Broughton serves a white mocha perfect for a cold winter day. But, then again, all their drinks are delicious. Their coffee is hand-selected from around the world. Then, they roast the coffee themselves, creating a unique roasting profile to extract the coffee’s full flavor. Blends is open from 8-3 Monday through Friday and 8-4 on Saturdays.
The Coffee Fox
The Coffee Fox, also located on East Broughton, serves a full espresso menu, Chemex pourers, and locally roasted PERC coffee. Warm-up with the cafe con Leche or a classic latte. The staff is friendly and don’t be put off by the line as it moves quickly. With three other locations - Foxy Loxy Cafe, Henny Penny Art Space & Cafe, and Fox & Fig Cafe - they’re sure to be a quick walk away from your historic district vacation rental.
Gallery Espresso
Gallery Espresso offers a cozy coffee bar atmosphere on Bull Street, across from Chippewa Square, aka “the Forrest Gump Square.” They serve high-quality coffee in the historic building, circa 1859. In addition to a full menu of coffee specialty drinks and espresso shots, Gallery Espresso also offers a wide variety of chai tea flavors.
Mate Factor Cafe
The charming and quaint Mate Factor Cafe is truly a one-of-a-kind destination for hot drinks. Try a Mocha Mint made with yerba mate, peppermint, agave, and steamed milk. The Old St. Joe’s is a blend of mate, coffee, and spices with honey and steamed milk.
Head to one of these cozy spots for a hot cup of joe to brighten a chilly winter day. After all, coffee offers more than just a warm drink.
As Gertrude Stein wrote, “it’s something happening … like an event, a place to be, but not like a location, like something within yourself. It gives you time, but not actual hours or minutes, but a chance to be, like be yourself, and have a second cup.”
