Rich in history and beauty, Savannah makes a wonderful destination for a mother-daughter getaway. With so much to do, it’s hard to narrow a list of activities, but here are a few of our favorites.
Take a stroll
Visit the squares and stroll the streets. With more than 20 squares that are immaculately groomed with fountains, flowers and mossy oaks, there is no city in the U.S. more beautiful for taking a walk. A couple of notable stops: Chippewa Square is recognizable from the film “Forrest Gump” as the spot where Forrest waited for the bus; and Madison Square is near lots of small boutiques, specialty shops and bistros.
Commune with the Dead
Savannah is known for its cemeteries and the one you really want to visit is Bonaventure, though Colonial Park Cemetery is right downtown. Both these places of rest are hauntingly beautiful with gothic gates, marble sculptures and more of those big, gorgeous oaks.
Enjoy a Spot of Tea
For a different afternoon tea experience, head to Mate Factor at 401 E. Hall St., a quaint, rustic teahouse where you can dine on the patio. Don’t expect Earl Grey served in China cups. This spot serves yerba mate, a roasty, toasty-flavored drink traditionally served in a cured gourd and sipped through a silver straw. If that sounds a little too “out there,” they also serve organic coffee, teas and cold drinks, as well as muffins, danishes and fruit-stuffed scones. Note: If you’re visiting from Sept. 29-Oct. 10, Mate Factor will be closed for the days between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.
Shop ’til you Drop
No visit to Savannah would be complete without a little shopping. Head to City Market for artsy items, jewelry, paintings, pottery and more. Or hit River Street, home to 75 boutiques, galleries and shops.
Hop a Trolley
Old Savannah Tours is the perfect way to take in the sights. The Hop On/Hop Off option gives you the opportunity to tour as you please for one full day. Stops include Historic Savannah’s most well-known destinations. If you want to get a full historic experience, book either the 90-Minute or Savannah Ghost tours.
Savor the Flavor
Savannah is home to a myriad of mouth-watering dishes prepared in some of the most renowned restaurants in the country. Garibaldi is one of those. With creative cuisine and a wonderful ambience, Garabaldi makes the perfect place to top off your Savannah visit. The Olde Pink House is another favorite of locals and tourists alike.
