Remember when playing in the sand meant building a castle with plastic pails and shovels? The Savannah College of Design takes the activity to a whole new level.
SCAD Sand Arts Festival 2020
Head over to Tybee Island to view the amazing work of SCAD students during the SCAD Sand Arts Festival 2020 on May 1. The event takes place on the island’s South Beach, where participants dig in to create fantastic concoctions rising from the sand.
As with everything that SCAD does, this sand art is world-class. Past creations include intricately designed sea creatures like an octopus, sea turtles, an entire dolphin pod and mermaids. There’s also been wizards, prehistoric creatures, gorillas and yes, even detailed castles.
While participation is only open to SCAD students, alumni, faculty, and staff you can cheer on SCAD artists. Or, enjoy the competition while soaking up some sun during this fantastical event.
What You Need to Know
There’s no free parking on Tybee Island. If you can’t walk from your accommodations, no worries. South Beach has a large public parking lot with a Pay & Display station. Cost is $2 per hour.
South Beach is also home to the Tybee Pier & Pavilion, a favorite gathering spot for locals and visitors. It’s also where you’ll find restrooms and a snack bar.
Grab some grub at one of the nearby eateries like Spanky’s Beachside for an eclectic menu that includes chicken fingers, wraps, salads, seafood baskets and even quesadillas. If you’re in the mood for a slice, head to Lighthouse Pizza. There’s also ice cream parlors, sno-cone stands and dockside restaurants.

After a day in the sand, gain an even great appreciation for our coastal environment with a visit to the Tybee Island Marine Center. They offer hands-on educational activities that kids and adults enjoy with a mission to cultivate responsible stewardship of natural resources, like those beautiful beaches.
