Savannah loves to throw a good party, and we certainly “Go Green” for St. Patrick’s Day. It’s one of our biggest celebrations of the year. Savannah’s festivities include a full week of events that culminate when thousands gather for the annual parade. Note that this year’s parade will be held Saturday, March 16, starting at 10:15 a.m.
If you want to spend St. Paddy’s Day in Savannah, book now, as our city’s celebration rivals the largest ones in the nation.
Here are a few things to know about the celebration:
- The Greening of the Fountain in Forsyth Park takes place at noon on Friday, March 8. It’s a Savannah tradition to dye all the fountains green and this is where (and when) it starts.
- The parade is historic. In fact, this year’s will be the 195th. It dates back to 1824 when the Hibernian Society of Savannah held its first procession. (Hibernia is the classical Latin name for Ireland.) Former presidents Harry S. Truman and Jimmy Carter (as governor) have attended the parade. It’s also huge with 400,000 people expected to attend. - The St. Patrick’s Day Festival takes place Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to midnight. Festivities and events are held on River Street and City Market with vendors, live music and more.
- First-timer’s Tip: You need a $10 per day wristband to carry a drink inside the designated “Control Zone” during the weekend. Purchase one at downtown booths. (They are not required during the parade.)
- Leave the car parked at your rental. Stay in the Historic District to be within walking distance of all the festivities. By staying with Southern Belle Vacation Rentals, you can avoid paying to park or searching for a parking place. There are also shuttles from sites around the Historic District. Stop by the Visitor’s Information Center for a map to navigate the Historic District. It also includes locations of public restrooms, which can be handy.
Bonus Tip
Wear green, but dress comfortably. You’ll see a lot of outrageous costumes, wigs and face paint. That’s fun, but you will want to wear good walking shoes and wear weather-appropriate gear. Remember that you will be outside for most of the day so bring plenty of water, snacks and chairs for everyone in your group.
