We’re fast coming to the end of 2019 and getting ready to ring in the New Year. Why not do it Savannah? After all, it’s a city known for parties and celebrations.
Perhaps, resident Mary Hart said it best as she showed writer John Berendt around the city, “We’re famously hospitable, in fact, even by Southern standards. Savannah’s called the ‘Hostess City of the South,’ you know. That’s because we’ve always been a party town. We love company. We always have.”
So, expect to experience Southern hospitality and get this party started. Here’s a rundown of where to welcome in 2020.
It’s “celebration central” at the annual City Market New Year’s Eve Celebration. The event includes live outdoor music throughout the evening. Grab a bite and libations at restaurants that are open for the occasion (though you need to make reservations). Drop in and stroll through the market all evening long. The celebration starts at 7 p.m. and admission is free.
Head over to River Street for Savannah Waterfront’s “Up The Cup” New Year’s Eve Celebration. Visitors from around the world gather for this fun twist on New Year’s by the Savannah Waterfront Association and Wet Willie’s when a six-foot to-go cup is raised over Rousakis Riverfront Plaza. At midnight, toast with your own cup and watch lively fireworks over the river. Activities start at 5 p.m.
See 2019 off with a bang at the beach with the Tybee Island New Year’s Eve Fireworks. The show launches from Tybee Island’s Walter W. Parker Pier and Pavilion at the stroke of midnight. Watch the sky light up from the beach near the pier, one of Tybee Island’s restaurants or from your own waterfront accommodations.
You can also welcome 2020 by celebrating the 1970s. Get tickets for “The 70s Show” playing at the Historic Savannah Theatre on Dec. 27-31. It’s a blast from the past as the cast of singers, dancers and band pay tribute to the glitzy-est decade, with two hours of music from that decade, from rock to pop to soul and disco.
If you prefer a quiet New Year’s Eve, book a reservation at one of the incredible Savannah restaurants and toast in the New Year with a special someone.
What do you say? How about kicking off a wonderful new year with a Savannah getaway?
