Let’s talk about fishing. After all, it’s a great outdoor activity you can do on your own or take the family to enjoy together. And spring is the perfect time to cast a line during a Tybee Island vacation. Local waters have an abundance of fish, including redfish, flounder, tarpon and seatrout. What you can catch really depends on whether you stay inshore or go offshore.
When staying on Tybee Island with Southern Belle Vacation Rentals, you’ll be close to plenty of fishing opportunities, so take advantage!
Fishing from Piers
If you want to keep your feet on land, the Tybee Beach Pier and Pavilion is a great place to try your luck. Located just off U.S. 80 at the end of Tybrisa Street, the pier is open daily with free admission.
The Lazaretto Creek Fishing Pier is a nice park under the U.S. 80 bridge. There’s also a launch at the park, which is great if you bring your own fishing boat.
While it’s free to fish from the piers, you will need a Georgia fishing license. Purchase a license online through the state’s Wildlife Resources Division before your vacation on Tybee Island. The state’s license covers freshwater and saltwater fishing.
Surf Fishing
Want to try surf fishing? The far north and far south parts of the beach offer excellent spots. You can even do some crabbing from the rock jetties located there. A good rule of thumb when fishing from the beach is if you don’t have a bite in 30 minutes or so, pack it up and move to another spot.
Offshore Fishing
If you want to venture offshore, several Tybee Island fishing charters can put you on the fish. The Tybee Island coast offers calm conditions and excellent year-round fishing. Huge bull reds can be caught on offshore reefs with light tackle. Sheepshead, striper, redfish, and sea bass are also plentiful.
With a charter, the boat usually provides licenses, tackle and gear, bait, ice, and expertise. But be sure to ask about that when you book. You’ll want to bring your own food, drinks, sunscreen, hat, and an ice chest to get your fish home.
And many charters offer inshore expeditions in addition to deep sea trips, so you don’t have to go far for a good haul. When you book your charter, just let the captain know what you want. Some charters charge by the hour, while others offer set trips of four hours or longer.
Fishing is a wonderful way to bond with your children and make family memories they’ll take with them for the rest of their lives. It’s a great way to spend time together. What better place to do it than on your Tybee Island vacation?
