The beaches of Tybee Island are open and ready to welcome visitors this summer and fall. By taking proper precautions, there is no reason to delay your beach vacation any longer.
Because social distancing is key to controlling the spread of COVID-19, the beach is a perfect place to get away from crowds.
Tybee Island Beaches
The quaint barrier island has three miles of public beaches, all of which are open. North Beach tends to be the quietest of the beaches. South Beach draws more of a crowd. Here’s a tip: Back River Beach is referred to as “the secret beach.” It’s a wide stretch of sand with gentle waves and dolphin sightings. Also, keep in mind that beachgoers tend to congregate near boardwalks and public restrooms. That’s not a good idea right now. Take a few steps further and it’s easy to distance yourself from others.
You can also take a stroll to the end of the Tybee Island Pier on South Beach. There may be people near the Pavilion but keep walking and you’ll pass any groups. Check out the catch from anglers casting their lines, spaced out far enough apart to comply with the six-foot safety guideline.
If you really want to get away from it all, sail, paddle or motor across Back River to the secluded Little Tybee Island. Sundial Charters offers a three-hour Little Tybee “Unplugged” excursion. The company has signed the Savannah Safe Pledge to indicate adherence to cleaning and sanitizing protocols.
Tybee Island Restaurants
Speaking of the Safe Pledge, several Tybee Island restaurants are also on board. The list includes both island locations of Lighthouse Pizza, Sting Ray’s Seafood, Fannie’s on the Beach, Sundae Cafe on Tybee, Bernie’s Oyster House, the Crab Shack at Chimney Creek, Rock House, Salt Island Fish & Beer, The Deck Beachbar and Kitchen, Spanky’s Beachside and Gerald’s Pig and Shrimp.
For breakfast or coffee, visit Cafe on 80, Tybean Art & Coffee Bar and Sunrise Breakfast. Local watering holes, including Wet Willie’s and Tybee Time Sports Bar, are also committing to safe environments. Click here for an updated list of open restaurants, shops and attractions.
