Tybee Island, Georgia’s beach, has three public oceanfront beaches and two river beaches, each with a different look and feel. South Beach is the island’s busiest beach and extends from 14th Street south to 18th Street, making for one of the most popular places to stay in Tybee Island.
South Beach
Located next to the main business district, Tybee Island South Beach has the most concentrated selection of motels and condos and is the most populated beach. With two large public oceanfront pay-to-park lots, public restrooms and a wide variety of restaurants, bars and beach shops, it is the perfect base for families. Enjoy the mild waves under a life guard’s watchful eye, comb the beach for shells or saunter along the edge of the surf. Walk just a block or two from the beach and you can grab something to eat or drink or buy some beach souvenirs.
Tybee Pier & Pavilion
The Tybee Island South Beach Pier and Pavilion, extending approximately 700 feet out into the Atlantic Ocean, has an old-fashioned feel about it. It’s a great place to watch people and keep an eye out for shore birds, dolphins and marine life. Fish off the pier or just watch the other fishermen reel in their catches. The pavilion offers live music during the summer and is the site for festivals and special events year-round. The pavilion can be rented for weddings, family reunions or other social functions. It also has public restrooms, a snack bar and picnic tables. If you feel like exploring, head under the pier to get a close view of barnacles, oysters and other marine life that cling to the pier supports.
Tybee Island Marine Science Center
The Tybee Island Marine Science Center, located near the pier, is open to the public with exhibits, galleries and aquariums. There are year-round programs on the beach, in the marsh, on the water or in a classroom. For a truly unforgettable experience, sign your children up for the Turtle Talk, Sift’n’Seine, or Marsh Trek. Or enroll them in the Coastal Kids Adventures (a sea camp open to kids from 6 – 11). Visit the Center’s website for available tours and classes.
