Tybee Island offers an array of family-friendly adventures for kids of all ages. Your family will love the sea, sun, and sand. But there’s a lot more to keep children busy during an island stay. And it doesn’t have to cost a fortune.
Hit the Beach
The main attractions on Tybee are its five public beaches, with pristine water and soft sand. Take the beach toys and buckets for sandcastle construction. Splash in the surf.
Go crabbing
The north end of the beach and the public pier on the south end offer places to dip a line and go crabbing. Another prime spot is the Lazaretto fishing pier. Bring some line, a swoop net and bait (raw chicken works great). Crabbing will keep kids hopping for hours.
Visit a Lighthouse
Climb the oldest and tallest lighthouse in Georgia at Tybee Island Light Station and Museum. The tower stands 145 feet tall, and you can explore three Light Keeper’s Cottages. The hours are 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. every day but Tuesday. Admission is free for children 5 and under and goes up to $12 for adults.
Learn the Coast
Learn more about local ecosystems at the Tybee Island Marine Science Center, open 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday. The new facility features exhibits, touch tanks and an aquarium.
Tybee Pier
The Tybee Island Pier and Pavilion at the end of Tybrisa Street makes a spectacular spot for viewing the ocean, fishing, and people-watching. Pack a picnic lunch and enjoy the scenery. The pier is open daily. Free admission.
See Dolphins in the Wild
Book a charter with Captain Derek’s Dolphin Adventure Tour to watch everyone’s favorite mammals (next to humans, we assume) play in the wild. Whether you want to see the swimming dolphins or catch stunning views of the Island’s iconic landmarks like Fort Pulaski and Tybee Lighthouse, this one-and-a-half-hour tour is a thrilling activity the entire family can enjoy.
Enjoy a Sweet Treat
Visit The Sugar Shack Candy Shop, a longtime favorite that brings visitors back, year after year. Located at 301 1st St., Sugar Shack offers an array of ice cream in more than two dozen flavors.
Sound like a vacation your kids would enjoy? It’s simple to book a Tybee Island stay. Pick your spot and make some memories.
