Garibaldis Cafe Savannah History

Garibaldi’s Café is currently located in an antique structure. The building’s first use was as a firehouse which German volunteer firefighters constructed around 1871. Many of the volunteer firefighters were civic leaders in the community and the firehouse became a popular place to socialize. The grand ballroom was the site for banquets, dances, meetings, and even fire drills. During 1884, Savannah established a city fire department and the city no longer needed the German volunteers. At that time, the building became Germania House, which was an upscale saloon that included ballroom dancing and entertainment.
