What can you do when you find yourself on Tybee Island on a rainy day? As it happens, quite a lot of things.
Tybee Lighthouse and Museum
First up, take a tour of the Tybee Lighthouse and Museum. Built in 1732, the lighthouse has guided sea-goers safely into the Savannah River for more than 270 years. Tybee Island Light Station is one of the nation’s most intact, with all its historic support buildings on a five-acre site. The Lighthouse is open from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. every day but Tuesday. Admission is $9 for adults; $7 for seniors and children 6-17; free for children 5 and under.
Tybee Marine Science Center
Next, check out the Tybee Marine Science Center, open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Check out the aquatic display to see baby alligators, polka-dot batfish (yeah, it’s a real thing), horseshoe crabs, turtles and more. Admission is $4 per person; kids 4 and under are free.
Fort Pulaski National Monument
Then check out the Fort Pulaski National Monument. While much of the park is outdoors, the Visitor Center and Museum offers exhibits detailing the fort’s construction and Battle of Fort Pulaski. There’s also a 20-minute film highlighting the fort’s history that shows on the hour and half-hour from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. each day. Admission is $7 for those 16 and over; free for those 15 and under.
Tybee Post Theater
You can always catch a show at the Tybee Post Theater. The historic theater, constructed in 1930 as a movie house for soldiers stationed at the local Army base. In 2015, after going dark in the mid-1960s, the theater raised its curtain again as a performing arts and movie venue, staging films, concerts, theater productions and more. Upcoming shows include “Stardusted Circus Winter Solstice” on Dec. 21; the film “Widows” on Dec. 27-29; Drivin N Cryin on Jan. 11-12 and the theatrical production “Doubt” on Feb. 2-3.
Tybean Art & Coffee Bar
Rainy days can also be spent just enjoying hot coffee at Tybean Art & Coffee Bar. It’s got a great vibe and is an cool place to warm up with a cup of joe before heading out to shop. Speaking of that, browsing local art galleries and boutiques is another fun way to spend a rainy day on Tybee Island.
