We residents of Savannah are a prideful people. We are proud of our history, of the grand manors that dot our streets, and even more, we are proud of those quirky and unique citizens of our town that have gone on to bigger and better things. If the sons and daughters of Savannah do well, it makes us ALL look good and we will brag on them through the end of time. This is where Flannery O'Connor comes into the picture. One of the most prolific short story writers of the 20th century, Ms. O'Connor was born in 1925 right here in our favorite place on earth, and as a tribute to her, her childhood home has been preserved and made into a museum that you can tour during your stay in Savannah.

Located at 207 East Charleston Street

Known for writing short stories filled with color and eccentric characters, the simplicity of the Flannery O'Connor Childhood Home may come as a surprise to its visitors, but it must be remembered her father was not a healthy man (he died of lupus when Flannery was only a teen), and when they first moved into the house he wasn't working. Still, as apparent from the stained-glass peacock hanging in the parlor window, life must still have been colorful.

Explore the bedroom where the young writer slept and dreamt; her wicker pram sits underneath the window in a corner, perhaps dreaming of the days when it was needed and loved. Wide plank wood floors lead guests from room to room—into the kitchen with it's 1930s style stove, a sunroom in the back of the house filled with wicker chairs and an empty birdcage, the dining room with the large table and a gorgeous mahogany china cabinet till holding dishware that the O'Connor Family used for years.

The courtyard in the back centers around a concrete statue, perhaps providing the aspiring writer with peace and quiet as she perfected her "scribbles." The gift shop attached to the home is filled with her books, as well as trinkets and souvenirs that will serve as great reminders of your "visit with Flannery" upon your return to real life.
