It may be winter now, but spring is just around the corner. With spring comes the dazzling display of flora colors in bloom. Thanks to moderate year-round temperatures, Savannah comes alive with color this time of year.
Take a walk through the Historic District to see the spectacular colors. Dogwoods in white, red, and pink are the first sign that winter is officially over. Azaleas and camellias bloom in early March and sometimes even late February. That’s just for starters. Gardenias, jasmine, and wisteria can also be seen throughout the District.
Coastal Georgia Botanical Gardens
For eye-popping color in various plant collections, visit Coastal Georgia Botanical Gardens at the Historic Bamboo Farm. Open Thursday through Saturday, Coastal Georgia Botanical Gardens offers a dozen gardens - from the Orchid Greenhouse to its Rose Garden to the 300-foot-long Crape Myrtle Allee to the Cottage Gardens with Asian tulip poplars, water hickory, Chinese pistachio trees, and more. There is no shortage of beautiful blooms at this facility, operated by the University of Georgia’s College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences.
Savannah Botanical Gardens
The next stop is Savannah Botanical Gardens. Owned and operated by the Savannah Area Council of Garden Clubs, Savannah Botanical Gardens has public areas free and open. The Gardens include formal and naturalistic plantings, including the Fragrance Rose Garden, English Roses, Perennial Garden, Bog Garden, and seasonal gardens. There’s even a Children’s Garden. Often the site of weddings, the Savannah Botanical Gardens is a real treasure.
Andrew Low House Garden
In the Historic District, the Andrew Low House Garden has one of three remaining original 19th-century garden plans in the city, dating to 1848. The Garden features historical species, including sago palm, English daisies, verbena, violets odorato, and holly fern.
Bonaventure Cemetery
See camellias at Bonaventure Cemetery, packed with an array of colorful blooms. The setting also maintains gorgeous dogwoods, azaleas, and live oaks. Take a tour to learn about the historic varieties.
More of the city’s iconic dogwoods also bloom at Telfair Square at West State and West York streets. The dogwood’s colors pop from March through May.
While the pandemic has made it difficult to schedule events, the 45th Annual NOGS Tour of Hidden Gardens, AKA Mask-arade Tour, is set to occur April 16-17, with safety measures in place. Visit springtime gardens located throughout the Historic District in North of Gwinnett Street (NOGS) to the Savannah River. Southern Tea at the Green-Meldrim House is served as part of the tour, with tickets starting at $40.
