Don your costume and grab your plastic pumpkin. It’s time to embrace everyone’s new favorite holiday. No, we’re not talking about Christmas or even Thanksgiving. When the air turns crisp and leaves turn colors, all thoughts turn to Halloween.
While Savannah is known for its ghosts and mysterious ambiance, it offers more than just a spooky vibe. The combination of Southern hospitality, fascinating legends, and the playful spirit make it a perfect destination for the Halloween weekend.
1) One fantastic way to enjoy Halloween in Savannah is to walk through the Historic District to view pumpkins and porch decorations. Savannah is, after all, a city that loves a party, and Halloween is just another excuse to get all decked out.
2) If you want to decorate your vacation rental’s porch, pick out a pumpkin at Madrac Farms, about a 20-mile drive north of Savannah. Open Saturdays and Sundays in October, the farm offers a family-friendly experience during the season.
3) Skip the trick or treat and go for the sweets with caramel or candied apples from Savannah’s Candy Kitchen or River Street Sweets. It’s one of our favorite ways to celebrate autumn.
4) Increase the fear factor with a visit to the Alee Terror Plantation Haunted House, open every Friday and Saturday in October if you’re game. Tickets are just $10 per person. The address is 100 Eisenberg Dr.
5) Also, on Friday and Saturday nights in October, the Davenport House Museum on Columbia Square puts on Living History: Yellow Fever in Savannah 1820. The program is a dramatic recreation of early 19th-century life, focusing on the psychological effects experienced during the Yellow Fever epidemic. Guests will make their way through the historic candlelit home and learn about medical treatments of the time period and home remedies.
6) For an adult night-out, book a Creepy Crawl Haunted Pub Tour. The tours department nightly during October from the Six Pence Pub, 245 Bull St. You’ll visit four local bars along with haunted and spooky Savannah sites and enjoy the lively nightlife of Savannah.
7) Or take a guided tour with a master storyteller to Bonaventure Cemetery, made famous in John Berendt’s “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil.” The tours take place at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., seven days a week.
8) For a change of pace, visit Savannah Pride on Oct. 28-30. The party kicks off with Masqueerade on Thursday, Oct. 28. The streets fill with fabulous costumes and drag in this one-of-a-kind event celebrating arts and culture. Then on Friday, Oct. 29, the Savannah Pride Parade rolls through downtown on its way to the Pride Festival in Ellis Square. Come out for the music, performances, food, drinks, and more.
