Fall is that cozy season when warm, spicy-flavored drinks and menu items pop up. That is fine with us. Who doesn’t love a pumpkin spice latte? But that’s just for starters. Autumn also means delightful flavors like tart apples, sweet potatoes, cinnamon, figs and ginger.
When visiting Savannah’s, you can whip up a fantastic meal in the well-appointed kitchen of your vacation rental cottage. Just pick up some local produce at the Forsyth Farmers’ Market, which operates from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. each Saturday. Shop for fresh carrots, greens, beets and herbs like rosemary, parsley, thyme and sage.
Or, let someone else do the cooking and pack the produce for the trip home. Savannah’s restaurants and cafes have top chefs preparing delicious seasonal fare.
Must-Visit Savannah Restaurants
Back in the Day Bakery
Start with homemade banana bread, fruit jam and more at the Back in the Day Bakery on Bull Street, open 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday.
Savannah's Candy Kitchen
Bite into a caramel apple at Savannah’s Candy Kitchen with locations on Julian Street at City Market and East River Street. Savannah’s Candy Kitchen also makes hand-scooped pralines of fresh cream, sugar and real butter, as well as their deliciously decadent traditional Southern pecan pie.
River Street Sweets
River Street Sweets is another candy maker offering gourmet caramel apples, pralines and glazed, flavored pecans, another seasonal favorite.
Pie Society
For an intimate pub atmosphere, head to Pie Society at City Market. Enjoy a fruit scone, quiche or sausage roll for breakfast. Their lunch menu touts authentic British meat pies like steak and mushroom, chicken and thyme and vegetable in a cheese sauce. Ask about the mini fruit pie selection for dessert.
The Lady & Sons
For good, old-fashioned Southern cooking served family-style, go to Paula Deen’s The Lady & Sons restaurant on West Congress Street. Dig into dishes like fried chicken, meatloaf, chicken & dumplings, collard greens, fresh candied yams, broccoli casserole and seasonal cobbler.
The Olde Pink House
One of our favorite restaurants, The Olde Pink House, creates one of the best sides you’ll ever put in your mouth, sweet potato with pecan vanilla butter. It is served with entrees like the pecan-crusted chicken breast with a blackberry bourbon glaze and the grilled pork tenderloin cooked with bourbon molasses. Both are also served with collards.
Foxy Loxy Cafe
Not looking for a full meal? Sip a hot apple cider, horchata latte or Mexican mocha at the Foxy Loxy Cafe. This delightful spot also serves a fig & chocolate scone that is flakey and delicate with just the right amount of crispness. Or order some of their zucchini bread. Vegan choices include a cinnamon roll, cranberry orange muffin and a vegan brownie.
